Bernie Sanders on Foreign Policy

I don’t think you are qualified if you have voted for the disastrous war in Iraq.” ~ Bernie Sanders

And yes, it was to his credit that Senator Sanders opposed the Iraqi war in 2003. He will keep telling us that every chance he gets. But beyond the Iraqi matter, Sanders appears to have no particular foreign policy strategy. He’s put it all out in a pretty ad hoc, chaotic mess of talking points. In 2016, he would continue the drone program Obama started.

“I think we have to use drones very, very selectively and effectively. That has not always been the case…What you can argue is that there are times and places where drone attacks have been effective.”

He would say absolutely nothing more specific: Seriously, what the hell does that even mean? Sanders claims both parties are ‘War hawks’ but he voted for funding the Iraq war and the evidently endless war in Afghanistan, and for military intervention in Libya.

Sanders is willing to criticize many of the most egregious over-extensions of American empire…it seems he has no interest in contesting the American suppression of democracy across the globe.”

How can anyone say those two things with a straight face — in a single interview — without getting whiplash? So much for pulling out of foreign wars.
