Back in 2016, when the intelligence community first started to understand the scope of Russian interference in America’s presidential election, one of the lesser reported threads of their investigation had to do not with Putin’s support for Donald Trump’s presidency, but with the mechanism Putin already had in place to support Bernie Sanders, were he to get the Democratic nomination. When Sanders lost the nomination to Hillary Clinton that thread went cold until it came up again in the Mueller Report in 2018. After thirteen Russians involved in Putin’s subterfuge were indicted, evidence that Putin had established the same mechanisms to support the Sanders campaign for the presidency emerged from Mueller’s investigation. Predictably, Putin was covering all his bases, investing huge resources in opposition to the only person he actually respects enough to fear: Hillary Clinton.

There is a reason that Putin felt that, in Bernie Sanders, he would have a compliant ally. While I don’t personally believe the conspiratorially hyperbolic…
