Evangelicals Bid for a President Mike Pence

Christianity Today Magazine

eading Evangelical magazine Christianity Today called for the impeachment and removal of Donald J. Trump today.

“We have reserved judgment on Mr. Trump for years now. Some have criticized us for our reserve. But when it comes to condemning the behavior of another, patient charity must come first. … To use an old cliché, it’s time to call a spade a spade, to say that no matter how many hands we win in this political poker game, we are playing with a stacked deck of gross immorality and ethical incompetence.”

This is huge because 81% of those identifying as Evangelicals voted for this man, and Billy Graham’s son Franklin Graham has been a voraciously loyal supporter of Trump’s administration from the beginning,

“…it’s ‘almost a demonic power’ that drives those opposed to President Trump.”

is not as if other Evangelicals did not cry foul on the reprobate Donald Trump much sooner, there have long been people of faith breaking with the Grahams and with Liberty University in response to their institutionally blind allegiance to Trump’s bizarre behavior and profoundly brutal policy initiatives.

There are Christians who remain who consider the good works of the man they call Jesus as the roadmap to salvation. Those who one might say “walk the walk.”

When President Clinton was impeached in 1998 for lying to Congress about a sexual impropriety — a charge that now seems positively quaint compared to the presidency of an alleged pathological sexual predatorChristianity Today condemned Clinton, supporting his impeachment. The case against Trump for sexual assault is extensive, including allegations of child sex abuse: still, this is the first hint of Christian outrage from any Graham affiliated entity in over three years. Très curious?

In explaining their withdrawal of support for Trump — more specifically, the “good Christian” call for his removal — the publication says,

“… this instance are unambiguous: The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president’s political opponents. That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral.”

Evangelicals have heretofore maintained that Trump earned their loyalty with Supreme Court nominees, including such dubious characters as Brett Kavanaugh; the steady economy — the economy he inherited from Barack Obama which now appears to have been so substantial that it has survived horrific economic and trade debacles under the Trump administration; and his “defense” of religious liberty — if and only if you are a white Christian.

So, in deference to these “positives” which have, according to this Christian organization, balanced his “grossly immoral character” in ripping babies from their parents and locking kids in cages at the souther border; in abandoning our long time allies the Kurds to annihilation by the Turks to please Turkish President Erdogan and Vladimir Putin; in shutting down the government — putting thousands of government workers out of work — to attempt to blackmail Congress into funding his useless “Wall.” And on and on and on: all balanced out by Trump’s tight relationship with Franklin Graham and his willingness to allow those identifying themselves as white Evangelical Christians to do virtually anything they thought to do to anyone they felt compelled to do it to.

Everyday for nearly three years “we the people” have awoken to find that this poser has committed a new atrocity — in our name — that no one could have imagined before but this nut job did it, then he tweets about how “perfect” his abomination actually is.

These “true believers” have redefined the term “false equivalency” in even remotely equating Trump’s madness to anything that has gone before.

finally today Christianity Today decides today that his activities in Ukraine, his attempting to leverage Ukraine into investigating his political rival in 2020 by withholding the defensive weapons Congress authorized — three years ago — so that the Ukrainians could defend themselves from Russian aggression, this is the day that Trump has gone too far. The Christians are “outraged, outraged I tell you” by the treasonous betrayal of country.

Not really buying this: what I speculate happened today is that, after Trump was impeached in the House of Representatives yesterday, these good opportunistic religious zealots seized an opportunity to see their boy Mike Pence assume the Oval Office.

It doesn’t matter that Mike Pence is up to his eyeballs in this Ukraine matter or that he’s nutty as your granny’s fruitcake, the odds that Pence will go down with his boss in a tandem dive into oblivion are slim to none. These people have never liked Donald Trump because no one likes Trump — he’s a completely disingenuous, disloyal, foul mouthed cretin — but the Evangelicals are every bit as transactional as he is for all manner of weird reasons. But Pence is one of theirs and replacing Trump with Pence is — I wager — reason enough to make such an abrupt turn on this faux benefactor and move for his removal.

Christian Evangelicals have been jonesing for an excuse to get rid of this guy, now they have it.

The sound of “President Mike Pence” will, without a doubt, bring on some hardcore erotic religious fervor, shortly followed by the Rapture. What could possibly be better?
